- This novel includes generations of
spirituality, mystery, history, and racial conflict. A black
woman, Mamie Patterson, and a white woman, Sarah Fleming, grow
up together in Asheville, North Carolina, and their lives are
forever intertwined. In 1935, each becomes pregnant and gives
birth within hours. Sarah is told her baby was stillborn and
is sent off to a mental institution. Mamie raises her twins,
one a dark male, Willie B. Jr., and one a light female, Memory
Grace. For more than 60 years, Sarah holds onto her intuition
that her baby did not die. When she meets Johnnie Mae Taylor,
a famous author, she confides in her and asks for help in locating
her family. Johnnie Mae is in the midst of a book tour, growing
concern about her aging mother, and excitement about her wedding
to the Reverend George Landis, yet is compelled to help this
woman. Even narrowly escaping the World Trade Center disaster
on September 11, she is presented with more evidence that will
help Sarah. In a series of serendipitous events in this well-written
narrative, Sarah and her family are reunited.

- "Have you ever loved someone
that you never had?" George Landris asks his fiancee Theresa
Jordan barely two weeks before their wedding. George, a hip,
dreadlock-wearing young pastor at Wings of Grace Faith Ministry
Church in Birmingham, AL, has just learned that his first love,
Johnnie Mae Taylor, barely survived a car accident in Atlanta.
Her husband and toddler daughter are still in critical condition,
and he feels compelled to lend his support. George's departure
is the signal for Theresa's prenuptial doubts to emerge. As the
wedding draws closer, George and Theresa grow further apart,
and Theresa's discovery of a dark secret in her father's past
seems to close the door on the couple's future together. Then,
a scandal erupts in the church, with George and Theresa at the
center. George clings to his faith to sustain him in his trials,
but Theresa's selfishness may mean the destruction of his ministry.
Fans of Victoria Christopher Murray's Temptation and Angela
Benson's Awakening Mercy will relish Griggs's outstanding
sequel to The Rose of Jericho. For all collections. Copyright
